Healing the body from within
through nutrition, education, and community.

Picture

The Restore Project is the nutrition component of the Military Veteran Project (MVP). We help service members, veterans, and their families rebuild their health with groceries, cooking classes, and practical tools that support a healthier lifestyle — because what we eat, drink, and how we sleep directly impacts how we feel, think, and cope.

What Is the Restore Project?
Picture
The Restore Project is a nutrition-focused program of the Military Veteran Project designed to help veterans and their families:

• Access to healthy groceries

• Learn simple, affordable recipes

• Understand how food, hydration, and sleep affect mental health

• Build daily routines that support long-term healing and wellness

Through partnerships with local grocery stores, farms, and community supporters, we provide hands-on education and real, tangible support — not just information on a flyer.

Why a Healthy Lifestyle Makes a Difference for Brain + Body

 • Diets high in ultra-processed, high-sugar, fast or convenience foods are strongly linked to higher rates of anxiety and depression. A meta-analysis found that greater consumption of ultra-processed foods was associated with increased odds of depressive (OR ≈ 1.44) and anxiety (OR ≈ 1.48) symptoms.

• Even mild dehydration (as little as a 1–2% body water loss) can impair attention, memory, and mood — with measurable drops in cognitive performance.

• Poor sleep combined with inadequate nutrition further amplifies the risks. One study of simulated combat conditions found that sleep loss, dehydration and under-nutrition produced significant declines in cognitive function and mood.

• Conversely, dietary patterns rich in whole, minimally-processed foods (fresh produce, lean proteins, whole grains, healthy fats) are associated with lower risk of mood disorders and better mental-health outcomes.

What that means for the Restore Project: By shifting toward wholesome groceries, cooking in-class to learn better habits, staying hydrated, and supporting good sleep — we’re addressing three major lifestyle levers that impact the brain, the body and the spirit. When food nourishes and habits strengthen, the whole system gets healthier.

Hands-On Cooking Classes

Veterans and families are invited to interactive cooking classes where we:

• Teach simple, budget-friendly recipes

• Show how to meal prep for busy weeks

• Talk through substitutions for healthier choices

• Make cooking feel less overwhelming and more enjoyable

Classes are designed to be judgment-free, practical, and supportive.

Personalized Nutrition Lists & Resources

Participants receive:

• Sample grocery lists tailored to real budgets

• Snack and meal ideas for busy schedules

• Hydration and sleep tips that support mental wellness

A Veteran’s Perspective

“I came to the Military Veteran Project exhausted, living off energy drinks and whatever was cheap and fast. I didn’t think food had anything to do with how I felt. The Restore Project didn’t judge me. They helped me shop, taught me how to cook simple meals, and explained how food, water, and sleep work together. For the first time in a long time, I started to feel more like myself again.”* — U.S. Army Veteran, Restore Project Participant
