Military Hometown Heroes Banner Program
The Military Hometown Heroes of Topeka Banner Program is a living tribute created for the community to recognize and honor Topeka residents and their family members who are serving, or are veterans who have served, our country in the United States Armed Forces. Each banner will be in honor of a specific Topeka service person and will include their name, branch of service and photo (if provided). Banners will be displayed on street lamps in Downtown Topeka from September 11- November 11 to both celebrate and remind the community of their dedication to our country.
Purpose and Description of Program:
This program was created to pay tribute to the brave men and women in Topeka who are serving, have served, or have given their life to our country in the United States Armed Forces.
The Hometown Heroes banners will be displayed on Kansas Avenue in Downtown Topeka. (All banner locations shall be determined solely by the City of Topeka)
The Hometown Heroes Banners are funded through donations. The cost of each banner is $200
(including installation and removal). To submit a tax-free donation in sponsor of this program, please see below.
Banners will remain in place throughout the course of one (1) year. Banners will be removed and put back up within the year depending on previously scheduled holiday and event banners.**
After the course of one (1) year, the banner will be permanently removed and given to the serviceperson or family member.
About The Banners
Banners measure approximately 72” x 24” with 3inch pockets on top and bottom and will have the Service Person’s name, image, military branch and rank. Banner types are:
The individual to be recognized must reside or have resided in the City of Topeka and call Topeka their hometown. Individuals must have served in any of the following branches (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard and Coast Guard) and must also meet one of the following conditions
- Currently be active service member
- Be an honorably discharged veteran
- Died in the line of duty
The initial cost per banner is $200.00 for the production, installation, and removal of the banner. A previously displayed banner that is still in good condition can be re-displayed the following year - the cost of installation and removal of the banner is $40.00.
Sponsorship / Donations
Sponsorships and donations will be used to assist families who would like to take part in this program and cannot afford to pay the cost of the banner requests. You can sponsor a specific banner/family or simply donate funds to be used as needs arise. Sponsors will be listed on the Military Veteran Project website as a program sponsor/donor from September 11 to Veterans Day during the year you contributed. To sponsor a banner, download the Guidelines and Sponsorship document and follow the instructions.
The banner will be displayed from September 11 to Veterans Day. After Veterans Day, the banner will be removed and returned to the person who made the application. If the banner is still in good condition and the applicant would like it displayed the following year - this can be done for a cost of $40 (to cover installation and removal).

Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first– served basis by the Military Veteran Project selection committee.
Once the application is verified and funding for the banner has been received, MVP will notify the applicant of the approval and create the banner.
Banners will be installed annually to coincide with September 11 and November 11 recognition events. The applicant will be mailed a notification letter of when the banner will be installed honoring the military service person or veteran.
The Military Hometown Heroes of Topeka Banner Program is administered by the Military Veteran Project in collaboration with the Topeka Chamber of Commerce Military Relations Council, Visit Topeka & Downtown Topeka, INC.
**The City of Topeka nor Military Veteran Project is not responsible for replacing banners that are stolen, damaged, or destroyed due to age, vandalism, or any acts of nature including high winds. Any loss or damage to an installed banner will be handled at the discretion of the City.
